Nick The Hat Project

SERIES OVERVIEW: NICK THE HAT
An AI-Driven Archival True-Crime Series Created by Michael Perri
THE LOGLINE
After a brutal, unrecorded police beating strips a brilliant Brooklyn electrician of his health and livelihood, he descends into a world of survivalist paranoia—building an underground surveillance empire and secretly wiretapping his own life for three decades. ### THE EXCLUSIVE IP: 12,000 Hours of Undiscovered Reality Nick the Hat is a highly scalable, prestige true-crime dark comedy built upon an unprecedented, exclusive foundation: a real-world archive of 12,000 hours of authentic audio cassette tapes recorded secretly in 1980s and 90s New York.
For decades, this audio has sat in boxes. Unfiltered New York screaming matches, tense underground nefarious negotiations, and absurdist daily grievances—all obsessively timestamped to the iconic 1010 WINS news radio ticker. Now, this completely untapped intellectual property is being brought to life.
THE STORY: A Tragedy of Grievance and Paranoia
The narrative centers on Nick Perri, a brilliant but deeply aggrieved electrician. In 1966, Nick invented the modern car alarm—a feat documented in The New York Times—but he failed to patent it, missing out on a massive fortune.
However, the true catalyst for his descent occurred years later. Long before camera phones existed to hold authorities accountable, Nick was brutally beaten by riot police during a chaotic labor protest. This unrecorded trauma left him with a severe brain injury and lifelong epilepsy. Unable to work his trade and with six children to feed, Nick sued the city. Trapped in an agonizing 15-year legal purgatory waiting for a settlement, his faith in society shattered.
Refusing to ever be caught off guard again, Nick weaponized his electrical genius. He retreated into the shadows, designing closed-loop surveillance systems for nefarious syndicates and dangerous underground figures. But the paranoia didn’t stop at work; Nick spent the next three decades secretly wiretapping his own home, recording everyone who crossed his path.
THE PRODUCTION: Pioneering AI “Archival Resurrection”
Nick the Hat hits every metric modern television networks demand: a complex anti-hero, an untapped true-crime foundation, and an engine for infinite seasons.
To prove this concept, the project utilizes an innovative AI-assisted production pipeline. We are not using AI to hallucinate a fictional world; we are using it as a camera to film the past.
Visual World-Building: Deploying state-of-the-art visual models (Runway Gen-3) to transform static 1970s family photographs into a photorealistic, cinematic New York world.
Audio-Driven Performance: Utilizing advanced audio-to-video lip-sync technology to map the raw, explosive audio waveforms of Nick’s actual tapes directly onto the digital faces of the characters.
The result is an unfiltered, visceral New York story that blends the paranoia of The Conversation with the dark, situational irony of Fargo.
THE PEDIGREE
While the core dialogue and situational tension are driven by the 100% authentic historical audio, the overarching narrative is a meticulously dramatized script designed for premium television. The Nick the Hat pilot script has already been extensively validated by the industry, earning placements and accolades at top-tier festivals including the DaVinci Film Festival, Big Apple Film Festival, and Shore Scripts.
